Why You Shouldn’t Work With a Brand Designer

Writer: Jen RafflesJen Raffles

Your business feels a little stale, a little stuck. Something’s just off... and then it hits you - aha! A brand designer is what I need! Because working on your brand, surely that’s the missing piece, right?

A blank to-do list with a yellow pen and yellow coffee cup on a desk.

Let’s get something straight: working with a brand designer is not the golden ticket that will suddenly transform your business into an overnight success. A stunning, well-thought-out, strategic brand identity? Absolutely. You got it. Job done. A foolproof content strategy, a full service/product suite, and a steady stream of clients? hmmm... Not quite.

I see this misconception a lot - this idea that once you have a beautiful brand, everything else will just fall into place. And while I’d love to tell you that investing in brand design is the one missing piece of the puzzle, the reality is this: branding is a tool, not a solution. It sets the stage, but you still have to show up and perform.

What Brand Design Can (and Can’t) Do For You

What It CAN Do:

👍🏻 Give You Clarity & Confidence – A well-designed brand identity helps you articulate who you are, what you do, and who you serve. It makes showing up in your business feel more natural because you actually feel clear about what you’re working on.

👍🏻 Help You Stand Out & Be Recognisable – Consistent, strategic branding makes you more memorable. People start to associate you with your unique visuals, tone, and message.

👍🏻 Provide a Foundation for Marketing – Your branding will inform how you present yourself on social media, your website, and your marketing materials. It makes creating content easier because you have clear guidelines to follow, and a clearer idea of who your audience is.

👍🏻 Make You Look More Professional – A polished, cohesive brand builds trust. It signals to potential clients that you’re serious about your business. The consistency it creates across your business enhances that professionalism, and strengthens that trust further.

👍🏻 Set the Tone for Your Future Growth – Your brand identity is a framework that supports your next steps. It helps you define your mission, vision, and values - essential pieces of long-term success.

👍🏻 Save You Time – You’ll perhaps get social media templates, ready-to-use files, a full logo suite, and brand patterns that streamline design work. This could mean no more wasting hours second-guessing every design choice - your brand will give you a clear, confident direction.

What It CAN’T Do:

👎🏻 Run Your Business for You – A brand designer isn’t a business coach, social media manager, or marketing strategist (unless they specifically offer those services of course). Branding is just one piece of the puzzle.

👎🏻 Make Sales Happen Automatically – Even with the best branding in the world, you still need to put yourself out there, engage with your audience, and actively market your offers. A great brand identity can facilitate this sure, but no one is looking at your beautiful brand if they do not know it exists in the first place.

👎🏻 Create a Content Strategy – Your branding can guide your messaging, but you still need to plan and execute a strategy to show up consistently. You still need to be creating, posting and promoting the content.

👎🏻 Replace Action & Effort – Branding will only work if you do. It’s the foundation, but it’s up to you to build on it and continue to build on it as you learn, grow and evolve as a business owner.

When done right, your brand can be a powerhouse for your business - it’s your best customer service rep, your friendly front-of-house, your employee of the year. But just like any top-performing employee, it needs strong leadership. You have to be the one calling the shots, making the decisions, and keeping the momentum going.

Well, what a great time to take a look at my services page and understand what I, as a brand designer, can offer you 🤗

Now, What Can YOU Do Next

What to Focus on After Your Rebrand

🙌🏻 Content Strategy – How will you consistently show up and connect with your audience? What did you learn while working on your brand identity? How will that key information play into a content strategy?

🙌🏻 Marketing & Visibility – Where and how are you putting yourself out there? What did your brand designer provide that could make marketing easier? What did that foundational work tell you?

🙌🏻 Sales & Offers – Do you have clear, compelling offers that align with your brand? What do you know about your ideal customer that will strengthen those offers into absolute must-haves for your audience?

🙌🏻 Customer Experience – How does your brand translate into client interactions and services? Remember, a great customer experience also involves visuals; are your onboarding materials like invoices, contracts, and emails fully branded? A cohesive brand presence at every touchpoint builds trust and professionalism. Don't neglect the details!

🙌🏻 Business Growth Strategy – What’s the next step for your brand beyond just looking good? How is your branding playing into that growth? A strategic brand identity should support your long-term goals and be adaptable, evolving seamlessly with any business growth.

Final Thoughts - Should You Work With A Brand Designer?

Branding is an investment in your business, and like any investment, its impact depends on what you do with it. You shouldn't work with a brand designer if you are simply looking for easy routes in business or a quick fix to a likely bigger problem. Do some groundwork first and be ready, because once you have a clear and strategic brand identity you have to continue the momentum, putting yourself out there in whatever way works for you, refining your offers, testing what works, and evolving as you go.

So, if you’re considering a rebrand (or investing in one for the first time), go in with the right mindset from the start. A great brand design (and designer!) will empower you, give you clarity, and make running your business feel easier but it’s still your job to take action. If you are looking for the easy route or a quick fix to a bigger problem, then this is not the time to be working with a brand designer.

And if you’re ready for a brand that sets you up for success and working with a designer who is going to guide and support you every step of the way (I can promise brand magic will happen but not a magic wand that does all the work for you sadly), well - you know where to find me 😉
