From DIY to Cohesive Branding
Running a small business is no easy feat, especially when you’re juggling day-to-day tasks and trying to keep up with your marketing at the same time. That was the story for Lindsay and her family-run business, You Said It - a brilliant card and gift company based in Carlisle, Cumbria. They had the creativity and the passion, but their branding wasn’t quite keeping up with their growing ambitions. That’s where Magic Feather Designs came in.

Meet You Said It
You Said It isn’t your average card company. They create quirky, thoughtful greeting cards, mugs, and more for all sorts of occasions, and they pride themselves on doing things a little differently. From offering an AI tool to help you craft the perfect card message to planting a tree for every 30 orders, they put care into everything they do. Plus, they handle all their printing in-house, ensuring each card arrives in pristine condition.
When Lindsay, who covers the companies marketing, reached out to me You Said It was already well-established, but their branding wasn’t quite working as hard as it could be. They had a logo and a limited colour palette, but beyond that, everything was created in Canva with whatever templates felt right at the time. Socials, emails, and marketing materials lacked cohesion, and the branding wasn’t giving them the polished, recognisable look they wanted and allowing them to stand up against larger competitors such as Moonpig or Funky Pigeon. Lindsay knew that to up their marketing game, they needed a solid brand identity to pull everything together.
As Lindsay put it:
"[We were] just focused on the day-to-day running of the business. We needed a cohesive brand identity and assets for use across all our platforms to make our lives easier and improve brand awareness."

The Magic Feather Designs Experience
I loved working on this project (not just because Lindsay and I were both Cumbrian bloggers back in the blogging hey-days! haha!) because I got to help a local business from my hometown shine. The brief was clear: keep the heart of the original logo but refresh it to make it more versatile. I cleaned up the design, refined the icon, and ensured the logo could work seamlessly across different applications.
Beyond the logo, I expanded their colour palette, adding hues that complemented their existing vibe while giving them more flexibility. I also created a full logo suite and designed brand marks they could use across their socials and marketing materials. To top it off, I crafted social media and email newsletter templates to make their day-to-day marketing easier and more cohesive.

The Transformation
The result? A refreshed brand that stayed true to You Said It’s original identity but feels more polished, professional, and purposeful. Now, they have a full logo suite, giving them greater versatility and flexibility with how and where they use their logo. Their expanded colour palette isn’t just pretty - it’s rooted in colour and sales psychology, working double-time to attract attention, build connection and again giving that flexibility within the branding..
I also created social media and marketing templates to keep their content consistent and uniquely theirs while saving them precious time. On top of that, they’ve got a comprehensive brand guide to ensure that everyone collaborating with the business is on the same page, keeping their brand looking and sounding cohesive, no matter who’s creating the content.
But the biggest transformation? Everything is now backed by strategy. What was once a lone logo surviving in the wild is now part of a fully thought-out brand identity, designed to help their business grow and thrive. When they put out content, it’s instantly recognisable and most importantly, they have the tools to keep it that way.
In Lindsay's words:
"Jen took the time to really understand our business, our customers, and our USPs. She listened to everything we wanted and really got under the skin of our brand. Working with Jen was a really positive experience; it felt collaborative and she was completely engaged throughout. We knew when to expect things and what she expected from us in return."

Where Are They Now?
You Said It is thriving with their updated branding. Whether it’s creating content for socials confidently or sending out polished, professional looking email campaigns, they now have that cohesive look they were needing to give their marketing a boost. A bold design that stands out and makes their brand instantly recognisable - meeting the project overall goals of greater visibility, saving time and rising to the level of their bigger competitors.
As Lindsay put it:
"We're really enjoying using our new assets and making it easier for our customers to spot our content in a very busy landscape!"

Final Thoughts
Working with Lindsay and the You Said It team was such a joy. Helping a fellow Carlisle business elevate their brand while staying true to their roots was incredibly rewarding. And here’s the thing - working with a brand designer isn’t always about starting over or reinventing the wheel. If you already have branding that feels right for your business but needs a little refining and polishing to help you grow and evolve, hiring a designer could be the answer. We’re not here to throw out everything you know and love, sometimes it’s about taking what’s already working and making it stronger, more cohesive, and easier to use day-to-day. That’s exactly what I did with You Said It, and now their brand is working harder than ever for them, helping their business level up while making life a whole lot simpler (because we love to work smarter, not harder!).
